Registering your baby's birthThe birth certificate is issued by the province or territory in which your baby was born. You should apply as soon as possible after your baby is born.It is never too early to apply for a Social Insurance Number ( SIN) for your child. If you're having a baby or adopting a child, you and your partner are entitled to parental leave. Each province has laws that protect your right to this time with your baby. Parental leave can be used entirely by you or split between you and your partner.Whether you're pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant, you'll want to figure out how much parental leave your family is qualified to take.

Each province offers a different amount of parental leave. You can look your province's amount up on our chart of parental leave by province.In addition to time away from your job, you may also qualify for benefits that pay you during your leave. These benefits are called parental leave benefits.Do I qualify for parental leave benefits and how much money will I get?Parental leave benefits are paid out by the federal government through Employment Insurance (or QPIP if you live in Quebec).In general, you must have worked 600 insurable hours in the year before you claim parental leave benefits in order to qualify for them.

You also must have contributed to Employment Insurance (EI) during that same year.If you are self-employed you can choose to pay into EI. The Service Canada website details the most up to date information on self-employment and qualifying for benefits.As for how much you will be given for parental leave, the basic formula is 55 per cent of your average weekly earnings up to a maximum amount.

When and how do I apply for parental leave benefits?If you're currently working and will be taking advantage of parental leave benefits, you'll need to apply for the benefit as soon as you stop working.You can apply in person at a Service Canada Centre.

In order to apply, you'll need to get a Record of Employment (ROE) from your employer. Either biological or adoptive parents can make the claim.
